What is burn rate?

Your burn rate is how fast your company spends cash, usually measured per month. It's the single most important number for any pre-profit startup, because it determines how long you can operate before you run out of money — your runway.

Gross burn vs. net burn

  • Gross burn = your total monthly operating expenses (salaries, rent, software, marketing — everything going out). It's what you'd burn with zero revenue.
  • Net burn = monthly expenses minus monthly revenue. It's your real cash loss each month. If revenue exceeds expenses, your net burn is zero — you're cash-flow positive.

How to calculate burn rate and runway

The formulas this calculator uses:

  • Net burn = Monthly expenses − Monthly revenue
  • Runway (months) = Current cash balance ÷ Net burn
  • Cash-out date = Today + Runway

When you add expected revenue or expense growth, the tool projects your cash month-by-month instead of assuming a flat burn — so the runway reflects how your spend and income actually change over time.

How to extend your runway

  • Cut non-essential spend. Even a 10–15% expense reduction can add months of runway.
  • Grow revenue. Every dollar of revenue directly reduces net burn.
  • Automate repetitive work instead of hiring for it — one of the fastest ways to lower burn without slowing down.
  • Raise before you're desperate. Most investors want to see 12–18 months of runway after a round.

Frequently asked questions

What is a healthy runway?

Most startups aim for 12–18 months of runway, especially right after raising. Under 6 months is a warning sign that you should be cutting costs or fundraising now.

Should I use gross or net burn for runway?

Use net burn — it accounts for the revenue offsetting your costs. Gross burn matters for worst-case planning (what happens if revenue disappears).
