Free Online Barcode Generator: Code 128, EAN-13, UPC-A and More as PNG
Barcode software has a strange habit of demanding an account, an API key, or a licence before it will draw a few black lines. For most jobs — labelling shelves, tagging equipment, numbering boxes in a stockroom — that is wildly out of proportion to the task.
This free online barcode generator for Code 128 and four other symbologies runs entirely in your browser. Type the value, pick the format, download the PNG. No sign-up, no key.
Pick the Format Your Scanner Expects
Five symbologies are supported, and choosing correctly matters more than anything else on the page:
- CODE128 — accepts any text or number. The right default when you control both the label and the scanner.
- EAN-13 — the 13-digit retail standard used across most of the world.
- UPC-A — the 12-digit retail standard used primarily in North America.
- CODE39 — an older format still common in industrial, automotive, and government systems.
- ITF-14 — used on shipping cartons and outer cases.
If you have ever wondered what a Code 128 barcode example looks like against a UPC-A barcode example, generate both. Code 128 encodes letters and symbols; UPC-A is strictly numeric and fixed-length. The visual difference is obvious once you see them side by side.
Why EAN-13 and UPC-A Throw Errors
This is the most common confusion, and it is not a bug. Retail formats require an exact digit count. EAN-13 needs 12 to 13 digits. UPC-A needs 11 to 12. Feed either one a word, or the wrong number of digits, and it cannot produce a valid symbol.
CODE128 accepts anything, which is why it is the sensible choice for internal use where no retail standard applies.
One important limit: this tool renders a barcode image from the value you supply. It does not issue or register retail product codes. Genuine UPC and EAN numbers for retail sale must be obtained through GS1, the organisation that allocates company prefixes. Use this to produce the image once you hold a valid number, or to create internal codes with CODE128 where no registration is required.
Control Size Before You Print
Two controls affect scan reliability more than they look like they should.
Bar width sets the thickness of the narrowest bar in pixels. Too thin and a scanner struggles, particularly on low-quality prints or curved surfaces.
Height sets how tall the symbol stands. Taller barcodes tolerate a sloppier scan angle, which matters when someone is waving a handheld reader at a box.
Then download the PNG and place it in your label layout.
A Realistic Example: A Stockroom Audit
A warehouse supervisor is numbering 60 storage bins so staff can scan a location instead of typing it.
These are internal codes, not retail products, so she picks CODE128 and enters values like BIN-A-014. She increases the bar width slightly because the labels will be printed on a basic office printer and stuck to textured plastic, and raises the height so scans work from an awkward angle on the top shelf.
Sixty PNGs, dropped into a label template, printed on a sheet of adhesive labels. No licence, no software install, no purchase order.
What Makes a Good Free Barcode Tool
If you are asking what the best free barcode generator is, the honest criteria are short. It should support the symbology your system needs, let you control size before printing, export a clean image file, and not gate any of that behind an account. Anything that demands a signup to draw a barcode is charging you in data for a task that takes milliseconds.
Who Uses It
Warehouse and inventory teams. Small shops labelling internal stock. Libraries and schools tagging equipment. Event organisers numbering passes. Developers testing scanner integrations who need a valid symbol quickly. For scannable links rather than product codes, use the QR Code Generator.
