How do I add or subtract a percentage from a number?
To add, multiply by (1 + percentage/100): a 15% tip on $40 is 40 × 1.15 = $46. To subtract, multiply by (1 − percentage/100): 20% off $80 is 80 × 0.80 = $64.
What is the difference between percentage and percentage points?
A percentage is relative; a percentage point is absolute. If a rate rises from 10% to 12%, that is a 2 percentage-point increase but a 20% increase (2 ÷ 10). Confusing the two is a common reporting mistake.
How do I convert a decimal or fraction to a percentage?
Multiply by 100 and add a % sign: 0.25 becomes 25%, and 3/4 (= 0.75) becomes 75%. To go the other way, divide the percentage by 100.
How do I find the original price before a discount or tax?
Divide rather than subtract. If $90 is the price after 25% off, the original was 90 ÷ 0.75 = $120. If $114 includes 14% tax, the pre-tax price was 114 ÷ 1.14 = $100.
Can it handle percentages over 100%?
Yes. 150% of 200 is 300, and going from 40 to 100 is a 150% increase. The calculator works with any positive or negative numbers.
