XML Sitemap Generator: Paste Your URLs, Get a Valid sitemap.xml

Search engines find pages by following links. Anything poorly linked — a new page, a deep product listing, something reachable only through a filtered view — may go a long time before being discovered, or may never be.

A sitemap solves that by listing your URLs explicitly. This generator turns a plain list of URLs into a valid sitemap.xml, in your browser.

What You Enter

URLs, one per line — the only required input.

Then defaults applied across all of them: change frequency (always through never, defaulting to weekly), lastmod date with a one-click "use today's date" option, and priority, defaulting to 0.5.

Copy the output or download the file.

Two Options Worth Knowing About

Sitemap index mode splits your file into 50,000-URL chunks with an index file above them. The 50,000 URL limit per sitemap file is a hard specification, not a suggestion — large ecommerce catalogues and publishers exceed it routinely, and a single oversized file is simply rejected.

Image sitemap mode treats indented image: URL lines under a page as images belonging to it. Useful when image search matters to your business — recipes, property, ecommerce, portfolios — where images drive real traffic.

Where It Goes and What to Do Next

Upload it to your domain root, then submit it in Google Search Console.

Also add the sitemap line to your robots.txt. That covers crawlers you never submit to directly and costs one line.

A Sitemap Is a Suggestion, Not a Guarantee

Being clear about this saves disappointment. Listing a URL in a sitemap does not guarantee indexing. It tells search engines the page exists and that you consider it worth crawling — the decision remains theirs.

What a sitemap genuinely does: speeds up discovery of new pages, surfaces pages that are poorly linked internally, and gives Search Console a baseline to report against. That last point is quietly the most useful — the submitted-versus-indexed comparison tells you how much of your site Google has actually accepted, which is diagnostic information you cannot get otherwise.

Only Include Pages You Want Indexed

The most common sitemap mistake is treating it as a list of every URL that exists.

Leave out: pages carrying a noindex directive, redirected URLs, canonicalised duplicates, thin pages you would rather not have judged, and anything blocked in robots.txt. Including them sends contradictory signals — the sitemap says crawl this, another directive says do not.

A sitemap of 200 pages you genuinely want ranking is more useful than one listing 2,000 URLs of which half should not be indexed.

Priority and Change Frequency, Realistically

Both are hints, and search engines treat them loosely.

Priority is relative within your own site, not a competitive signal — setting everything to 1.0 communicates nothing at all. Change frequency should reflect reality; marking static pages as "daily" when they change annually simply makes the field meaningless.

Sensible defaults handle most sites. Do not spend an afternoon on these fields.

A Realistic Example: New Pages Not Being Found

A B2B company publishes twelve new location pages, linked only from a dropdown in the footer. Six weeks later, four are indexed.

The marketing lead pastes all twelve URLs into the generator, uses today's date as lastmod, downloads the sitemap, uploads it to root, and submits it in Search Console. She also adds the sitemap line to robots.txt.

Then she fixes the actual cause — adding contextual links to those pages from the relevant service pages. The sitemap accelerates discovery; the internal links are what make the pages worth keeping.
