What an llms.txt file actually is
Think of it as robots.txt for AI assistants, with an important difference in purpose. They live in the same place and do opposite things.
- robots.txt tells crawlers what they may not access — a restriction list.
- llms.txt tells assistants what matters and what your site is about — a curated map.
- The goal is being understood and cited accurately, rather than leaving a model to assemble an impression from whichever page it happened to crawl.

Publishing it takes two steps
