Why Use This Background Remover?
It takes the background out of an image in one step, with no sign-up and no watermark on the result.
The unusual part is where the work happens. A small segmentation model is downloaded to your browser once, and every image after that is cut out on your own machine — the picture itself is never sent anywhere.

Measured from the PNG it produced for us.
From a real run: we fed it a 900×900 PNG of a red mug on a light grey background. It returned a 900×900 transparent PNG of 53,538 bytes, with the alpha split shown above. The model file is 4,574,861 bytes.
How to use it

The first image is the slow one. After the model is in your browser's cache, later images skip the download entirely.

Hair against a busy background, glass, and semi-transparent objects.
Those need manual refinement whichever tool you use — this one included.
One thing worth knowing: in our run the soft grey shadow under the mug was not fully removed. Cast shadows read as part of the subject to a segmentation model, so check underneath before you use the cut-out on a coloured background.
PNG or JPG?
Save as PNG. JPG does not support transparency, so a removed background comes back as white — which looks identical on a white page and wrong everywhere else.
That is why this tool always hands you a PNG, and why the file is larger than the JPEG you started with. The extra bytes are the transparency.

Being straight with you
What runs where, and what it can't do
- Your image is not uploaded. The cut-out happens in your browser. The only thing downloaded is the model — a 4,574,861-byte file from this site — and it goes one way.
- The first run is not instant. That 4.4 MB has to arrive before anything can be cut out. After that it is cached and later images start straight away.
- It is a small model, on purpose. Its input is 320×320 pixels internally, which is why fine detail like flyaway hair softens. A bigger model would be slower and heavier to download.
- Cast shadows often survive. Ours did. The model separates subject from background, and a shadow sits ambiguously between the two.
- Very large images are scaled down. Output is capped at 2,200 pixels on the long edge, to keep memory use sane in a browser tab.
- It cannot edit. No brush, no erase, no restore. If the cut-out is 90% right, the last 10% belongs in an image editor.
